Purchasing Seeds

I recently bought seeds from http://http://www.survivalistseeds.com/Home_Page.html So I think I'm all set with beans for a long time.

But I wanted to buy more of a variety, such as peas, lettuce and squash. Can anybody recommend a good website? Maybe something you have used and been happy with. I just don't want to buy something and find a Monsanto logo on it.

Re: Purchasing Seeds

everyone in my family is getting one of these for x-mas:

http://efoodsdirect.com/product-disp...ml?c=1&id=1018

$35 for that type of selection, sealed in a can that will last 10+ years is hard to beat.

no shit! I bought a 1 yr supply of dried food from them.

Definetly a good Christmas present. My family still thinks I'm crazy, some of them are starting to come around a little bit.

yeah, it's a eally good deal. i bought the same thing from gardeninacan.com last year, and it was $75. the efoods deal is killer. i ordered them about 2 weeks ago, from order to delivery was 4 days, and the cans look really good with the big sticker label. definately a good present.

Re: Purchasing Seeds

Try http://www.seedsavers.org/ and or www.southerexpo

Make sure you get NO GMO and Non Hybrid. I used both these seeds last year, and had very good results. Seed savers shows you on every bag how to save that seed. Something that you might need to know for the next year.

One of my favorites for a long, long time...........

http://www.territorialseed.com/

The only possible minus is that they are pretty tuned in

To the Northwest Maritime environment.

That being said, their scarecrows tend to be, upon

Closer observation, Monsanto Representatives.

True or False?

If my neighbor has a veggie garden full of gmo grown vegetables could that some how contaminate my garden and sterilize my seeds? Their garden is about 20 yards away from my house.

We wade into some really ugly shit, here.

Think of gmo's as vegetable Chernobyl x 1 billion.

It's not likely to sterilize your seed, but there certainly would be some unwanted hybridization. You would want to keep track of what your neighbor is raising so you can raise something else. Not different varieties, entirely different species.

These guys have a variety of sealed seed kits. Some specific to various parts of the country...

We like Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. A fine young man runs the company. He fights against GMO seeds. Their magazine is great, too. Lots of variety.

The most beautiful seeds I've ever bought have come from Rougelands seeds.

You can get an entire seed setup, NON GMO, for 25$

The seeds are some of the most colorful seeds....

as a matter of fact, I just placed a order for the spring garden.

This is a really great deal. One question though I was looking on there website about the $25 deal but I can't seem to find what packages are included. Is there a link on there site that states what you get? Or what did you get when you ordered?

Re: Purchasing Seeds

You need to be careful buying unknown seeds that they pick out for you.
Some variates of seeds don't do well in certain areas. I learned by trial and error may years ago that not all seeds are created equal. For instance,
Take carrots, some carrots have a thick hard core. This makes the carrots almost impossible to eat. Their is a brand of spinach you can grow all summer long, (New Zealand ). Most of the green beans offered in those cans are POLE Beans, which means you need to have a trellis system or a 'pole' for them to grow up. Some beans have strings, which is fine if you like to floss your teeth every time you eat them. Stringless beans are offered. By reading the descriptions of each seed, you would know that! Bush beans are available , they grow about 2 ft high and don't climb. If you pick out your seeds after reading the description you will be more happy in the long run. If you are worried about preserving the seeds in a can, why not just get a food saver and suck the oxygen out of the bag you put them in? Same thing! You should be saving a few years worth of seeds anyway, so why not package them for a year at a time. That way the seeds to be used in 2 years will not be opened.

www.seedsavers.com and www.southerexposure.com tell you about the seeds and how they rate taste wise. Also, you will be able to get more of a variety. Every year, I try to buy something different.. Don't be afraid to try something new. The basics are nice, but variety is the spice of life!

For something this important, I would not leave it in the hands of someone else to pick for me!

If you browse around you will find a list of what the seed packs come with. They basicly come with EVERYTHING from herbs, flowers, cool weather vegis and warm weather vegis.

I'm still harvesting swiss chard planted last summer.

You are correct. I think they will be the same varieties. All in all, when you get them take note of how pretty the seeds are. Are all heirloom seeds this colorful?

Re: Purchasing Seeds

I prefer to select my seeds myself and like Aoobs non hybrid selection. They have good prices. For a few items I buy from companies with varieties I especially like.

I prefer pole beans as you get more production per square foot.

To prevent corruption of your seed by a neighboring garden, hand pollinate a few blossoms from your own plant, then cover it so the blossom cannot be reached by insects with pollen from your neighbor. Obviously you have to cover the blossom before pollination can occur, then pollinate, then put the cover back. Once the fruit starts forming the cross pollination risk is gone, but make sure you mark, somehow, either by still covering, or a loose ribbon, or some non destructive method, the fruit you made sure of good seed from. For small plants you could cover with something like a screen tent, and hand pollinate one entire plant.

Well I thought that I'd update my statues with rougeland seeds. I had been emailing Kelly back and forth about about different things. He actually use to live in the same area I live now (Idaho). Giving me advice about growing in this area and how most of the seeds will be suitable for this area. Seems like a pretty nice guy.

Well anyways I order there $25 seed pack and all I have to say is wow. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to grow them all but I'll sure try. I ordered them last week and I got them yesterday. I'll take a picture of all the seeds and post it later.
